Avec Jean Bernab\u00e9 et Patrick Chamoiseau, il fonde le mouvement de la cr\u00e9olit\u00e9. Il est le premier Martiniquais \u00e0 publier un roman en cr\u00e9ole, <em>Bitako-a<\/em> (1985), avant de passer au fran\u00e7ais avec <em>Le N\u00e8gre et l&rsquo;Amiral<\/em> (Grasset, 1988). Suivent une trentaine d&rsquo;ouvrages, dont <em>Eau de Caf\u00e9<\/em> (prix Novembre 1991) et <em>Ravines du devant-jour<\/em> (prix Casa de las Am\u00e9ricas 1993).
